Canvas For Hybrid Courses

How Canvas Works in Your Hybrid Course

Welcome to your hybrid course! Here's a quick guide on how to navigate Canvas and make the most of your learning experience:

Course Structure

  • Modules:  Your course is organized into modules, which align with each week in the course. Each module contains [what's in each module?]. You should navigate the module in order, starting with [however your module is organized]. By the end of the week [Friday, Saturday, Sunday?] you should have completed all parts of the module, including any assignments or quizzes.

  • Content: You'll find [lectures, readings, videos, and other resources] uploaded by me, your instructor. You can access these at any time, so you can learn at their own pace.

  • Timing: Each week begins with a new module. Here's how to navigate timing:
    • Pacing Yourself: For each in-person day (Mondays and Wednesdays) you will be expected to come to class prepared to engage with lecture, discussion, and activities. That means completing that day's  readings/videos/podcasts before you come to class. For the online day of the course (Friday), you can complete the readings, watch the videos, and engage with the course materials at any point before the end of the week, so long as you complete graded assignments by their posted due date.
    • Follow the Order: Quizzes and assignments are placed after the course materials you need to complete them. Make sure to follow the order in the Module Overview and Work Flow pages.
    • Don't Skip Ahead: Avoid jumping straight to quizzes or assignments. Complete the readings and watch the videos first to ensure you're prepared.

Assignments and Assessments

  • Assignments: You will submit assignments directly through Canvas. In this course, these will include [what does your course include? Essays, projects, quizzes, etc?]. There are set deadlines for each assignment that you must meet in order to earn your grade in the course. In general, there are assignments due [when? Weekly, every other week, Fridays, etc.?]

  • Quizzes and Exams: You will have various types of assessments, including multiple-choice, short answer, and essay questions. Some might be timed, so be sure to check the details.

Communication Tools

  • Announcements: Check the announcements section regularly for important updates and deadlines from your instructor.

  • Discussions:  Participate in [graded?] discussion boards to share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate with your classmates.

  • Messaging: Use Canvas's messaging system to communicate directly with your instructor and classmates.

Grading and Feedback

  • Gradebook: Keep track of your grades and progress through the gradebook. You can see how you're doing in the course at any time.

  • Feedback: I will provide feedback on your assignments and assessments. This is a great way to understand your strengths and areas for improvement! To access assignment feedback, navigate to "Grades" on the Canvas Navigation Bar. Then locate the assignment. There you will see your assignments with scores and whether I have left comments.
      • To see Comments
        • Click the Comment Icon (looks like 2 speech bubbles) on the right hand side to see any written or recorded comments as well as any files I share with you as part of my feedback.
        • You can also click on the assignment link itself to access these items and respond to my comment using the "Add a Comment" box.
      • To see Additional Feedback (annotations, rubrics)
        • Click on the Assignment link itself
        • To see annotations, click "View Feedback"
        • To see the rubric, click "Show Rubric"

Additional Features

  • Calendar: Use the calendar to keep track of assignment due dates, exam schedules, and other important events.
