Action Research Learning Module

Module overview

Have you ever been curious about the effects of one of your instructional strategies? Have you wanted to try something new in your classroom and measure its success? As educators we can fall victim to our own assumptions about student success and how our pedagogical decisions affect it. Action research is a style of research design that emphasizes learning while doing and allows for educators to answer questions about their classrooms through taking action and sharing their reflections with others.

What would we like you to get out of this module?

“Action research can be an effective form of self-reflection focused on one’s teaching practices and can help instructors develop either by running a project or by learning from others as they present their findings. If we can help empower instructors to take the action research leap, then our college will benefit from the process two-fold. That is why at the end of this module you will have the ability to submit your work as a proposal for research, pairing you with IR to bring the project to life.” – eLearning & Institutional Research

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define action research as it relates to education
  2. Contrast action research with traditional research
  3. Identify a classroom problem to explore through action research

Grant opportunity: Winter through spring 2022

For those that are taking this learning module starting in Winter of 2022, you will be eligible for a $75 dollar stipend for completing your self reflection for this module. Additionally, there is opportunity to apply for one of fifteen $600 grants for completing an action research project using what you have learned in this module! The first 16 proposals that are accepted will be eligible for funding.

To receive funding you are required to:

  1. Enroll and Complete this learning module.
  2. Submit a research proposal to the grant committee. All proposals will require instructors to contact their Deans for approval before they submit.
  3. Have your research proposal accepted. This requires the committee to review your work and the VPI at your campus to sign off!
  4. Present your project to the CCS community during the CCS eLearning Academy and any additional places where you want to share your findings!

If you are interested, feel free to skip ahead to the proposal submission to learn more. Again, this is not required for you to complete the module or begin doing action research in your classroom, but is required to receive the larger grant funding.
