Tools for Quizzes

Notes to instructors

  • The language below may be useful in a syllabus or within specific assignments.
  • We recommend due dates for quiz revisions.
  • If a student scores poorly on a quiz, we offer revision opportunities with required reflection.
    • The quiz reflections can be formatted as a Canvas assignment. We recommend including end dates for this type of reflection.
    • Alternatively, you can use the comment box within assignments to facilitate student reflection.
    • If you are part of a Smart Start course, ask the Smart Start instructor to work one-on-one with students and manage resubmissions.

Quizzes

Why do we have quizzes in this class?

Practice is so important when it comes to [subject or area of learning]. You have weekly quizzes in this class so that you can continue to practice what you’re learning. These quizzes are one way to help you evaluate yourself. Do you understand these concepts, or do you need to revisit these ideas?

Your [subject or area of learning] quizzes are open book, but they are timed. It’s important that you complete all of the practice exercises before beginning the chapter quizzes or unit reviews.

What should I do if I know I can do better on a quiz?

If you are not pleased with the results of the quiz or the unit review, you have a few options:

  1. The lowest quiz* grade will be dropped. We all have difficult weeks; it’s okay.
  2. You can retake the quiz after submitting a written response addressing the questions you missed. I’d like an explanation discussing your thought process or what it should have been. Feel free to use page numbers as appropriate. You may use the template below:
    • Question 1: _________________________
    • I chose ________________ because I was thinking_______.
    • The correct answer is ______________.
    • Our textbook discusses this concept in the _________ subsection or page.

This response is due within one week of the original quiz due date. After receiving your response, I will send you information about your quiz retake.

  3. If you are in a Smart Start course, you will be asked to meet with your Smart Start instructor before completing a retake.
