Ungrading Approaches

There is no unified definition for ungrading. Instead, it is a collection of non-traditional approaches that support learners. This range of practices share some common traits. Frequently, they focus on authentic assessment, rely heavily on student metacognition, reflection, and self-evaluation, and involve discussion/collaboration with students. Many make room for formal or traditional grades, or blend approaches. Ultimately, you have the power to revise, remix, and innovate any of these approaches till you find something that works for you and your students.

The following video covers a variety of ungrading strategies, with info in two different categories:

  • the "less is more" grading philosophy
  • including student reflection and assessment in course grades

The next page has information about alternate systems, including portfolios, labor-based contracts, and specifications grading.
