Angela Smith's Classroom Presentation of "The Danger of a Single Story"

Project Overview

Angela Smith teaches communication studies classes at Spokane Community College.

I use this discussion in the CMST 227- Intercultural Communication class during the first week of the quarter. This specific discussion is what really motivates them to want to learn about others that may have different perspectives from their own.

This presentation is motivated by:

  • In light living in a pluralistic society where miscommunication has severe consequences for all parties involved, I believe this activity will best prepare our students to navigate and flourish in the many diverse settings they will face in life.
  • My lived experiences as an African American and continual research/interest regarding DEI fuel my interest and passion for the topic.
