Diamond Wilson's French Cultural Readings, Films, and Texts
Project Overview
I am a French and Spanish instructor, and some of our cultural outcomes involve cultural readings and authentic film/texts.
I am authoring the OER material for the cultural tidbits on each chapter, and some of the topics are difficult: stories of revolution, of slavery, and of tribute to name a few. I wanted to make sure that it was not just my voice coming through for the students, but that I was also pointing them to other media where they could interact with the works of people who are closer to the countries, stories, and histories being shared—I want to “pass the microphone” to the authors of authentic media and text who have lived it or experienced it more closely.
This project only scratches the surface of what could be. I have included some recommendations for additional discovery at the beginning of the chapters, but that could certainly branch out into being a full appendix of information with a wealth of primary source media and texts. I think this could be used as extra credit opportunities, as jumping off points for additional research, as fodder for final presentations/papers that link the in-text writing with an additional resource, or as additional reading/film viewing for a club.
