Discrimination is the practice of treating a person in a negative way because of their religion, sex, age, race, social class, legal status, disability, pregnancy or nationality. This happens in many work places all over the United States. There are many national laws and state laws that protect workers from discrimination at work. It is important to know your rights as a worker. Respect at work is necessary at all times.
Types of Discrimination
People experience discrimination for the following reasons:
Religion: Belief in God(s) or lack of belief in a higher power
Sex / Gender: A person's identity as male or female, or other
Age: How old or young a person is
Race / Ethnicity: How people categorize a person based on physical characteristics like skin color, or cultural heritage
Social class: How much money someone makes
Legal status: One's status in a country as documented or undocumented
Disability: Physical or mental conditions that limit a person's activities or movements
Pregnancy: The period when a woman is pregnant with a child
Nationality: A person's status of belonging to a nation
Sexual orientation: How a person identifies based on attraction to the same sex (homosexual / gay), opposite sex (heterosexual / straight), or multiple sexes / genders (bisexual, pansexual)
