Read:
Percent (%) means a part of 100.
A percent (%) represents how much of the total is used.

There are 100 people in the picture. Each person represents 1%
If 5 of the people in the picture use gestures when they talk, they would be 5% out of the 100 people.
If 17 of the people in the picture interrupt sometimes, they would be 17% out of the 100.

Read
Sometimes the total is not 100. The total can be any number.
Example
I have 24 cookies, so 24 is my total and equals (=) 100%. If you eat 12 of my cookies, I only have 12 remaining.
12 = 50%
I have 10 students, so 10 = 100%. If 2 of the students are not in class, I only have 8 students remaining.
8 = 80%.

How can you find the percent? Read these two (2) examples.
Example 1:
I did a survey with 10 students. I asked 10 students the questions, so 10 is my total.
3 students gave me the same answer to question #1.
What percent is 3 students out of the 10 total students?
I need to multiple 3 by 100. Then, I divide that number by the total students.
3 x 100 = 300
300 / 10 (total students) = 30%
Example 2:
I did a survey with 200 students. I asked 200 students, so 200 is my total.
30 students gave the same answer to question #3.
What percent is 30 out of the total 200 students?
I need to multiply 30 by 100. Then, I divide that number by the total students.
30 x 100 = 3000
3000 / 200 (total students) = 15%
Now you try it. Read the information below and answer the question. You may need to use a calculator. You can use the one on your computer, on your phone, or at your house. Submit your answer in the assignment page.
DO
Read:
Read the situation. Do the math to find the percent of students with the same answer.
Sally did a survey of her class. There are 20 people in her class. 20 is the total number of students. She asked each student the same question: "How many hours do you study English each day?": A- 1 hour or B- 2 hours
8 people answered A
12 people answered B
What percent of the students answered A?
