Read:

After the first Europeans came to North America, thousands of people traveled to this new world to start a new life.  They started towns.  The towns grew into colonies.  Soon America had 13 colonies stretching along the Atlantic Coast.  Life was hard and dangerous, but the colonists enjoyed being independent and having certain freedoms.

England was still in charge of the colonies.  England wanted to make money from the colonies.  The ruler of England, King George III, and Parliament made new laws called acts to make money from the colonies.  One tax was the Stamp Act.  This made colonists pay to use paper, newspaper, and other documents.  Another tax was the sugar tax.  Colonists had to pay extra money to use sugar.

These new taxes made the colonists angry.  They did not like being ruled by a king and did not like Parliament telling them what to do.  America wanted to be free from the King of England.  This started the American Revolution.
