Like the United States, Washington State has many immigrant populations from different parts of the world. The first Latinos arrived with the Spanish in the 1700s. More Latinos came to Washington to work in mining. They were an important part of transportation for mining.
In the 1850s, Chinese began arriving in Washington. There was serious discrimination against the Chinese. They were not allowed to leave the United States. In 1882, a law did not allow more Chinese to immigrate to the United States.
In the early 1900s, Japanese came to Washington. Many of them worked as farmers. In the 1910s, Latinos also started working in agriculture.
These are just a few examples of groups who immigrated to Washington State. Many immigrants experienced discrimination, but they were an important part of Washington State's development.
