The Talking Drum in Nigerian Pop Music -- Fuji Music

Fuji Music

•  The talking drum appears in most styles of Nigerian pop music, including fuji, juju and highlife.
•  Fuji originates from “were” music, designed initially to arouse Islamic faithful to prayer. Today, Fuji is secular music, having little or no connection with relgious beliefs.
•  Dr. Sikiru Ayinde originated the music and named it when he saw a poster of Mt. Fuji in Japan.
•  Style: Fuji uses Yoruba lyrics, western and electronic instruments, and African rhythms.

Video Clip: Bantu Feat. Ayuba "Fuji Satisfaction." Note the western pop influences in fuji, including electric guitars and saxophones. Listen for the talking drum, which you will briefly see as well.
