Read through these and use them as a study guide

 

1. Music Beyond the Americas (Lecture, video and Canvas Readings): Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of cultural relativity, how it applies to the ways in which we as westerners listen to music, and how music functions in the same ways (though it may sound different) among all cultures.

Examine written sources to identify key relationships between music and culture among the Kalinga tribe living in the Philippines. Demonstrate an understanding of the term "mingor," the nature of the Kalinga tuning system as a flexible system, and the role of field research in understanding a culture other than one's own. View the video, The Bamboo Muse and demonstrate an understanding of Kalinga bamboo musical instrument making and the reasons why Beni Sokkong has chosen to pursue this trade.

3. Music of the Classic Period and Mozart (Canvas Readings and Lecture): Identify 1) the reasons why western classical music differs from popular music, and 2) Mozart's most impressive musical feat, as well as those things that make him an important composer.

4. Beethoven and the Romantic Period (Canvas Readings and Lecture): Demonstrate an understanding of the accomplishments of the three most important composers in western classical music. Examine written sources to dentify the key reasons why Beethoven remains an important composer. Examine written sources to identify how a lock of Beethoven's hair came to reveal the cause of his death. Interact online with a performance of Beethoven's music and note key features in the music as outlined in the folder, "Study Questions for Lesson 3."
