n this module we will examine a few key forms of popular music in America. This module is lengthy; hence, the module exam is divided into two parts. Make sure you pace yourself accordingly through the module. I strongly advise that you do not wait to the last minute to finish this module.

 

The Power Point Presentation IMPORTANT: Begin working NOW on your Power Point Presentation. Read through the instructions for the Presentation in this module. The location for submitting the PPP will be found in either one of the next two modules, which will also show the due date as well. Make sure to browse the instructions and check the due date in order to schedule enough time for this assignment.

 

Compose A Blues Stanza (Assignment): Demonstrate a knowledge of key biographical landmarks in Billie Holiday's life and career as well as how jazz is influenced by the blues. Demonstrate an understanding of how the 12-bar AAB form influences rhythm, the lyrical structure, and harmony in Holiday's example of "Fine and Mellow." Write your own blues stanza that conforms to the format used by Billie Holiday in the last stanza of "Fine and Mellow."


Jazz in America and Germany: Evaluate information sources (readings and videos) to identify key differences between early jazz as popular music and modern jazz as art. Identify the main reasons for jazz moving to Germany and what the music symbolized for those that embraced the music in that country.

 

 
Module 4 Objectives
Read through these and use them as a study guide

  1. American Popular Culture and Music (Lecture): Identify key relationships between popular culture and technology as well as some examples of how popular music developed in this country.

  2. Music of the Americas (Lecture and Online Readings): Identify the ways in which African musical influences came to South America and why multiple rhythms is an example of this influence in black Peruvian music. Identify key influences in the development of black Peruvian music and some of the sub genres and stylistic features of the music. Demonstrate an understanding of the role that Peru Negro played in continuing the tradition of black Peruvian music.

  3. Amador Ballumbrosio and Afro Peruvian Music (Video): View the video and identify how faith, religion, and zappateo dancing carry over into black music in the village of El Carmen, Peru.

  4. Power Point Presentation: Consult information sources and identify key factors in the development of an artist’s career (one that the student chooses). Demonstrate the ability to distinguish between “musical genre” and “musical style” in the music of an artist of one’s own choosing. Identify significant correlations between an artist’s music and certain cultural factors, including audience demographics and social message. Reflect upon one’s own life experiences and identify as well as describe how these enable you as a listener to relate to and appreciate a particular musical artist and his/her music.
