LECTURE 3: Watch and Learn How the Ruben Tube Works

Music as A Physical Property

Keep in mind there are several perspectives to take when trying to define what is music. For instance, we can look at music as an art form, as self expression, as an emotion, as a certain style or genre, and as part of history. For the moment, we will look at the physical properties of sound.

Music is sound. Sound travels through the environment in the form of waves that displace air molecules as they move through the environment.

Watch the following video, which helps to illustrate the concept of sound and music as wave forms:

2. Go to the link below, which is a Word Doc that you will save on your computer and open.  Read about the physics of sound waves. The basic premise is as follows:

Music is sound, and sound travels through the environment in the form of waves that displace (with pressure) air molecules as they go along. Note especially how the peaks and troughs of a wave relate to air pressure. Reflect on those ideas and you should have a good understanding of how the Ruben Tube works from a physics perspective.
