Module 2 Introduction

This module, especially the lectures and Canvas readings, grapple with the troublesome problem of defining music. First, you will develop a familiarity with some of the basic components that go into music, including the physical makeup of sound itself. Then the question becomes when does sound become music?

The idea here is not to make musicians out of students or cast them into an endless sea of terminology. Actually, I hope you have fun learning about these topics and questions. You will have a Discussion Forum assignment in which you reflect upon the lectures and reading materials and decide whether or not music is strictly a human phenomenon. Or do you really believe birds "sing?"

To complete this module and all remaining modules, simply work through each file, assignment and exam or quiz in the order they appear in the course. It's pretty straightforward. Remember to check your Module Tab or Calendar for due dates for any and all assessments.

Module 2 Objectives (Read through these and use them as a study guide):

  1. What Is Music? Discussion Forum Assignment: Evaluate information sources for points of view and to identify key factors in the process involving how sound becomes music.

  2. Listening Skills: Listen to and identify key features and events in music. Identify the basic components of music and how they work together and separately.
