Why are there Zeroes in the Extra Credit Assessments in Gradebook

Extra Credit and Canvas Glitches

From time to time you will have opportunities to complete extra credit assignments, if you choose to do so. These will be explained as they appear in the modules. Some of these may or may not have assigned completion dates. Check the Modules to be sure.

The Canvas Glitch

Remarkably, Canvas is not yet set up to handle extra credit. Assigning extra extra assignments requires a work around. The way I have done this is by dividing all assessments into two categories: non extra credit and extra credit assessments. The non extra credit assessments are set at 100% of the course. The non extra credit assessments are set at 14.5% which means you have the potential to raise your entire grade by 14.5%, assuming you score all the extra credit questions correctly.

It is important to be aware of how extra credit assessments will appear in Canvas. Because extra credit exams are weighted, the total possible points for extra credit assessments will still show up in gradebook though they are not calculated into the total possible points for the course. The reason for this is that all the non extra credit, graded assessments are set at 100% for the course. Extra credit assessments are set at 14.5%, which means if you get all the extra credit questions correct your overall score for the course will move up 14.5%. In other words, the total possible points for extra credit assessments do not matter though they are displayed in Gradebook.

Also note that in Gradebook all extra credit assessments already have a score of zero posted for each student. When you take an extra credit assessment the zero will change to whatever number of questions you got correct. If you do not take the assessment, the zero simply means that zero points will be added to your overall score.
