ENGLISH SKILLS

Because you are high-intermediate English level learners, translating WILL NOT improve your English skills. Your writing, reading, grammar, speaking, listening, and math skills will improve by using in-class opportunities to practice them. Specific skills in each area are listed below:

Reading

  • Develop and use pre-reading and post-reading strategies.
  • Increase comprehension by reading for main ideas, details, inference, and vocabulary in context
  • Interpret charts, graphs, and forms for workplace and academic purposes.
  • Assignments will be based on the book, Seedfolks, and other assigned non-fiction readings.
  • Eating Smart and Being Active Nutrition Classes, WSU Spokane County Extension
  • Don’t TRANSLATE! Translation is not reading.

Writing

  • Build pre-writing, writing and editing skills by completing writing on assigned topics.
  • Develop well-written sentences, paragraphs, and three paragraph essays.

Grammar

  • Correct grammatical mistakes in sentences, paragraphs, and essays.
  • Understand and use verb tenses (past and past progressive, present perfect, and future), modals, phrasal verbs and other grammar areas.
  • Grammar is studied to improve speaking, writing and reading/listening comprehension.

Speaking

  • To improve spoken fluency, practice speaking/listening skills learned with teacher Erin.
  • Peer Mentoring – Conversation with SCC Communications students Thursday afternoons
  • Work in pairs or groups to improve communication in English.
  • Give presentations to the class about assigned topics or vocabulary.

Listening

  • Learn English through film, other videos, recordings of class book, and online- especially try Randall’s listening lab https://www.esl-lab.com/
  • Follow teachers’ instructions and presentations by classmates.
  • Respectfully listen to your classmates when in pairs, small groups and as a class

Computer Technology

  • Access Faye and Kelly’s class CANVAS course (http://tiny.cc/esl45) It has grammar websites, reading skills (https://readtheory.org), and additional resources to improve your English.
