Activity: Develop an Assignment-Level AI Policy
- Due Dec 8, 2024 by 11:59pm
- Points 1
- Submitting a text entry box, a website url, or a file upload
Purpose
The purpose of this exercise is twofold. First, it is meant to help you consider and clarify your position on the extent to which AI use might enhance or detract from the learning goals of your course assignments. Second, once you've established your assignment-level AI philosophy for one or more of your assignments, this exercise is meant to encourage you to consider how you will communicate that policy to your students.
Task
- Review the AI Assessment Scale by Perkins et al. (2023) on the previous page, if you haven't already. Note that this scale is just one way to think about and communicate an AI policy and while it might resonate with some instructors, others might prefer different approaches.
- Select one or more assignments from one of the courses you currently teach or plan to teach in the future in which you think some students are likely to use generative AI to complete the assignment. Consider using the assignment that you experimented with in the first module activity.
- Consider whether using generative AI for that assignment could benefit or detract from your students' learning, creativity, workforce preparation, etc. If you think that some AI use could be beneficial, then take that idea a step further to consider in exactly what ways AI use might help students meet their learning goals (e.g., brainstorming, editing, full AI collaboration, etc.).
- Finally, write a clear statement that explains to students if generative AI use is permissible for the assignment(s) you chose. If AI use is permissible, be sure to state unambiguously the ways in which students should/can use AI and, also, if and how they should cite or declare their AI use. Criteria for Success
A successfully completed submission will demonstrate that you have considered whether using AI for one of your course assignments could support student learning and, if so, in what ways. Your submission should also include a statement that communicates to students the specific ways (if any) in which AI use is acceptable.
