Assignment: Transitioning to Hybrid
- Due Dec 31, 2021 by 11:59pm
- Points 0
- Submitting a text entry box, a website url, a media recording, or a file upload
Purpose
It can be difficult to conceptualize a model as broad as "Hybrid Learning" without applying it. The purpose of this assignment is to help you analyze Hybrid learning techniques and how they might assist in adjusting your own course design. This activity aligns with all of our module learning objectives:
- Identify factors that make a course Hybrid
- Examine how on-ground activities can be transitioned to online
- Assess Hybrid learning techniques to adopt into your course design
Task
Prompt 1A
Explain how you would design a week in one of your on-ground courses according to a Hybrid model. Please be clear in explaining what changes you would need make to scheduling and activities, and what the benefits might be.
(or)
Prompt 1B
If you have already taught hybrid, describe your hybrid course, explaining how you developed your schedule and activities. What did you learn from this process, and what would you like to improve or refine?
Prompt 2A
What technology or tools do you need to substitute your on-ground activities for online? Who can you talk to for brainstorming or support? How can you help your students navigate your hybrid course?
(or)
Prompt 2B
What technology or tools have you already used to support hybrid learning? What was your discovery process like, and how have your students responded?
Example
Transitioning to Hybrid
I chose my on-ground art history course. In a normal week, students attend lecture and have discussions in class about the theme of the week, which usually pertains to a specific artistic stylistic period. At the end of the week, they have micro-presentations about our theme. I think the course would benefit from a Hybrid approach by allowing more time in class to focus on the micro-presentations and group activity. To achieve this, I think I can move lectures and discussions online, condensing the material into two online days, Monday and Tuesday. The lectures and discussions can be released the Friday before. Moving the lecture discussions online for students to digitally annotate artworks with their peers will increase the time they have to interact with the themes from lecture, do the necessary research, and share their ideas with the rest of the class. When we are on-ground later in the week, groups can use the time to design a museum exhibit around the stylistic period and themes of our weekly focus, with Friday being set aside for presentation day. By moving my course to a hybrid model, I will hopefully off load some of the pressure created by my on-ground lectures while simultaneously giving students more time to complete meaningful activities with their knowledge. My hope is that this will also improve the quality of the work they are doing since I can act as a resource to guide them during their group work.
What tools do you need?
I will need a way to record my lectures for asynchronous online viewing and will need a way to annotate art pieces online. I am thinking of using Panopto's screen capture tool so I can create voiceover recordings, then will upload them to the course in Canvas for each weekly theme. To allow for group annotation I think I will use Perusall since I can upload high resolution images of art pieces and allow students to tag areas for comments and discussion.
