Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to move us from access to information, to action with information. As our learning analytics become more applicable it is important to become more aware of how our knowledge of them can make impacts in students behavior, course design, assessment validity, and student engagement. This assignment is designed to align with our module's learning objectives:
- Identify sources of learning analytics available to you
- Evaluate learning analytics
- Select appropriate interventions and course change
Tasks:
- For this assignment, you will assess one area of learning analytics in your course. Choose between general Canvas course analytics, quiz statistics, or Panopto analytics.
- Use the resources provided in this module to apply a critical lense on the area of LA that you want to assess.
- Identify interventions that could be used to improve a component in course design.
Criteria:
You will know you've successfully completed this assignment when you submit a brief reflection on a possible intervention that you plan on taking in one of your courses. An example is below.
I decided to look at general Canvas analytics in one of my courses. I used the training in the module to focus on items that weren't viewed in my course. In the first week of the quarter, I was able to identify that 4 students hadn't yet viewed my course syllabus. Those 4 students went on to have a challenging time during the quarter, and I believe had I known earlier that they weren't engaging in the course, I could have intervened earlier to help steer them back on track. I could possibly develop a syllabus quiz to assess their reading of the syllabus, or just use this tool early in the quarter to identify students who may be lagging behind.
You can submit your reflection either as a text submission, a media comment, or an attached document.
