Analytics for Students
As we continue to grow our capacity for data literacy throughout the district, it is also very important to keep the student in mind throughout that process. Students should have access to their own data and Canvas should be no exception. While the student options for learning analytics isn't as robust as a faculty members', there are still some important pieces of information that can be taken and applied. For a consistently updated resource, I recommend linking students to the Canvas guides page on students analytics Links to an external site.. That page shows students quite a bit of information about their Canvas behaviors, however I don't see it as entirely useful.
Once piece of information that is useful to students though is Grade Details. Grade Details allows students to see the grade distribution for the assignment and view the mean, high, and low scores. Often overlooked, this can allow students to see how they are doing comparatively.
Students can access this information by going into Grades and selecting "Show all Details".
Data Literacy:
It's important to know when you engage with a product or website, just exactly what you are signing up for. Some websites use trackers to market your internet searches to companies that sell those products. Canvas, our learning management software, also collects information about your interactions within the course. These aren't for marketing purposes, but rather to inform instructors on students who aren't engaging in the course.
Did you know?
Canvas continually keeps a log of:
-
- Every time you login
- Every page you visit
- Every time you take a test or submit an assignment
- Every browser and operating system you visit from
- Every message you send
- The times and IP addresses of each page view
- Analytic, graphical views of your performance over time in a given class.
Your instructor can access much of this information. Many of them will use this information to reach out to you if you are falling behind or struggling in classes.
