Alignment

Whether you're talking about anatomy and posture, the wheels on your car, the mechanical parts in a machine, or strategic alignment within a business, alignment provides strength and stability.  Things simply work better when all the components are aligned.

Course alignment is no different.

triangle-3.gifCourse Alignment is the connection between course goals, learning objectives, learning activities and assessment. If a course you’re teaching is aligned, it means that your stated course goals and learning objectives are in harmony with the activities and assessments given to students. Course alignment helps ensure that both you and your students have accurate expectations about what will be taught in your course and that you will be assessing students based on the stated course goals and objectives.

Students typically respond in a more positive manner when they realize the work they are doing in class has a direct influence on their goals. When a course's objectives are clearly aligned, students can see the reason for learning activities, which can create a higher level of intrinsic motivation.

When learning activities or assessments aren't aligned it can create a feeling of busy work, wasted time, as well as a fragmented learning experience that disconnects students from the effectiveness of your instruction.
