Breaks to stand/walk or leave class as needed

Definition:

Allowance to stand up to move around or leave class when needed. In online classes this includes turning off camera and muting to take a break.

Purpose:

This accommodation allows you to stand up and move around during class as you need to in order to manage your disability. This can be used to manage attention or physical pain. This accommodation may also be used to step out of the classroom when needed to manage anxiety or other medical conditions.

Responsibilities:

Student: Communicate with your instructor at the start of the quarter to determine what this accommodation will look like in their class. When standing up or leaving the classroom do it in the least disruptive way possible.

Instructor: Communicate with student at the start of the quarter to determine what this accommodation will look like in your class. Discuss the least disruptive way the student can take a break.

DAS: Work with instructor and student to solve problems as needed.

How to Use:

Meet with your instructor at the start of the quarter to discuss what this accommodation will look like in their class.
When you need to take a break during class do so in the agreed-upon way, and in the least disruptive way possible.

Hello ________________,

My name is __________________. I am a student in (class) this quarter. As you may have seen on my accommodation letter from DAS I have an accommodation to take breaks during class to stand/ walk and possibly leave class. I would like to set up a time to have a quick conversation about the best way to meet this accommodation in your class. I am available (days/times you are available to meet).
