Tip #3: Search again and again and again.

Research means doing a search more than once.

There are many ways to look for information on your topic. Sometimes it means switching up your search strings - the words/phrases you type into the search box.

  • Remember there can be many different ways to describe a topic (ex. car, vehicle, automobile).
  • You can try different approaches also like researching the opposite of your topic (ex. freedom of speech/censorship) or a related topic (ex. drug addiction/alcoholism).

You can also add filters to your search string to be specific about the type of information you are looking for. Filters vary by search engine/databases. Databases tend to offer more filter options like the following:

  • Scholarly articles
  • Magazine, news, journals,etc.
  • Date range
  • Language

You should try a variety of search strings to help you learn more about your topic. Check out some of the following videos for how to create a better search string.
