How do I learn and participate in online classes?
Most online courses are taught in Canvas, a web based learning management system. In Canvas, students will be able to submit assignments, post to discussion boards, take quizzes, study material, and more. If your instructor uses a different software or tool to teach, your instructor will notify you.
The student experience
To be successful keep in mind that online classes require the same time commitment and expectations as on-ground learning. However, due to the change in modality there are also additional considerations to make.
Skills
Taking a class online puts more emphasis on a students ability to manage their schedule and projects. Without scheduled class time for instructors to check in and keep you connected, organization is key to keep track of your pacing through a course. Without the physical presence of an instructor to gauge student need, students may also find they need to advocate more when they need help.
Technology
Though specific technology skills may vary by program and course, the need to have a basic understanding is a must. CCS has training for online learning tools such as Canvas, but it is recommend that before taking an online class you are able to:
- Download and install software applications
- Create, save and manage files including extracting Zip files
- View PDF documents
- Use e-mail applications including sending and receiving attachments
- Use a web browser proficiently
- Multitask with web browsers and software applications
- Use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Have access to a webcam and microphone
- Take screenshots
- Identify your web browser and operating system version
