What you missed at the eLearning Academy
Welcome back everyone, we hope you had a great summer, and are enjoying the start of the new school year!
We loved seeing everyone that attended the eLearning Academy. Our two keynote speakers were both amazing, and our faculty presentations were on point with the theme! If you missed out or wanted to re-watch any of our fantastic sessions, head on over to the 2023 eLearning Academy shell to find recordings and resources from all of our presenters
What you missed in Canvas
There have been a few updates of note to Canvas over the summer, a new Pearson textbook integration, and we've also added a new Zoom integration that you may have noticed. Our Canvas Guru Jerry Troupe has the details, click on the "Canvas Updates" tab below to read more!
Tuesdays at 1:05pm we host short (20 minutes, give or take) discussions on an eLearning technology or technique. We will be live-streaming on Zoom and YouTube. If you'd like to be part of the recording, join the Zoom session. If you'd like to view the presentation and interact on chat, visit the live YouTube broadcast. You'll also be able to watch the YouTube recordings at any time after the broadcast.
Oct. 10 @ 1:05pm: New Features in New Quizzes As Canvas transitions from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes, we strive to keep you in the loop regarding updates and new features. In this session, the third in our series on New Quizzes, we’ll discuss the latest updates to the process for migrating Classic Quizzes and Question Banks to New Quizzes and Item Banks as well as some additional features that have been added to New Quizzes.
Oct. 17 @ 1:05pm: Zoom integration in Canvas We recently enabled a Zoom integration in Canvas, which you should now see in your Canvas navigation bar options. This new integration makes it easy to quickly schedule and share Zoom meetings with your classes, and even create bookable appointment meetings! We'll show you how to enable Zoom Meetings in Canvas, how to use it effectively, and how your students can interact with it. Join the Oct. 17 conversation on ZoomLinks to an external site. No Tech Talks for Oct. 24th, eLearning Instructional Designers will be out of town for a conference!
Oct. 31 @ 1:05pm: Custom Grading Schemes Canvas’ Gradebook is a powerful productivity tool, but it has limitations in how it calculates and displays grades. Instructors often find themselves hitting a wall of what they want to do with their gradebook and what Canvas lets them do. But we do have some options for flexibility and experimentation, in the form of Custom Grading Schemes! Come to this session and we’ll talk about how custom schemes can help facilitate labor based and contract grading, specs grading, and a variety of ungrading concepts!
Nov. 7 @ 1:05pm: Using Annotations in Canvas Do you teach online and miss being able to give feedback directly on assignments? Are you an on-ground instructor who is tired of shuffling through stacks of physical papers or worksheets when grading? Well if you like to markup, Canvas has you covered! We will be showing off how to create assignment submissions in Canvas that allow for both student and instructor annotations to expand the flexibility you have for assigning and receiving student submissions. Join us to save paper and time using the Canvas' annotation tools! Join the Nov. 7 conversation on ZoomLinks to an external site. View the Nov. 7 conversation on YouTubeLinks to an external site.
Canvas Updates
New Pearson publisher integration
Over the summer we installed the latest Pearson LTI integration in Canvas, you'll see it called "Access Pearson" in the Navigation links. This combines the two previous Pearson integrations "Pearson Revel and "MyLab and Mastering." For now, Revel and MyLab are still active in Canvas and available separately, but Pearson has indicated that they may be deprecating those in favor of Access Pearson by the start of Winter 2024. So if you use Revel or MyLab, you should contact your Pearson rep to make sure that you content transitions correctly.
Zoom Meetings
Well folks, it's finally here! Zoom is now fully integrated into your Canvas course. The button has been hidden by default on the course menu, so you'll need to move it to the active course navigationLinks to an external site. to use it. You still must have fully licensed Zoom account to schedule meetings.
When you click on the Schedule a New Meeting button, you’ll see a regular meeting scheduler that includes the “Add Sections or Groups” field. The field allows you to restrict meeting participation to only those students in the class. At this time, you can only restrict the meeting to the class as a whole and not to individual students. You can schedule both one-time and recurring meetings, as you did before. Once the meeting is scheduled it will be added to the Canvas course calendar and students will receive a notification in their Canvas Inbox. If they have their email notifications set to be notified about changes to the Calendar, they will also receive a notification to their email.
When you schedule the meeting, an automatically generated meeting ID will be created that is specific for that meeting and you will not be able to use your personal meeting ID. If you record the meeting, the recording will automatically upload to your Meeting Recordings folder in Panopto, as it did before.
When students click on the Zoom Meetings button, they will see a list of meeting scheduled for the class and nothing more.
Updates to the Canvas Help Menu
We've made several updates to the Canvas Help Menu.
The Panopto support telephone number and link to the Panopto Help Ticket page have been added.
A link to the Respondus LockDown Browser download site has been added.
A link to the student help ticket system for the Respondus LockDown Browser has been added.
