New team member in eLearning!
If you haven't met her yet, make sure to say hi to our new Instructional Designer, Melanie Coyan! Melanie has been an adjunct geology instructor at SFCC since 2017 and has taught geology courses both online and in the classroom. Prior to teaching at SFCC, she worked as an exploration geologist and also in a technical training and development role. She earned her Ph.D. in geology at Arizona State University. Since graduate school, she has been drawn to both geology and digital pedagogy. She has thoroughly enjoyed teaching geology courses at SFCC and is now excited to transition into this instructional designer role. In her free time, Melanie loves spending time with her husband and children, running with her dog, playing ultimate Frisbee, and generally spending time outside.

Better Webcam Lighting, Made Easy and Cheap
We're all using our webcameras more often these days, whether it's for live Zoom meetings or asynchronous recordings. But webcams are finicky devices, especially when it comes to lighting. By request, eLearning's Instructional Media Specialist Rick Suhr made a short, informative video showing how to quickly, easily, and cheaply improve your lighting when using your webcamera!
Tuesdays at 1:05pm we host short (20 minutes, give or take) discussions on an eLearning technology or technique. We will be live-streaming on Zoom and YouTube. If you'd like to be part of the recording, join the Zoom session. If you'd like to view the presentation and interact on chat, visit the live YouTube broadcast. You'll also be able to watch the YouTube recordings at any time after the broadcast.
Oct. 4 @ 1:05pm: Early Intervention & Canvas
Both SCC and SFCC campuses have Early Alert systems to help at-risk students, but it can be hard to know when intervention is necessary. We’ll show you how Canvas can help identify students who may be disengaged or at risk, then we’ll talk about how Early Alert works, how and when you should use it, and what happens next!
Oct 18 @ 1:05pm: Video Discussions with Flip(Grid) Flip (formerly called FlipGrid) is a tool designed to make asynchronous video discussions easy, engaging, and mobile friendly. Flip has recently introduced some accessibility updates and cool new featuresthat have gotten us excited about exploring it further, come and see if Flip video discussions might be something you want to try!
Oct 25: No Tech Talks, eLearning's ID team will be attending a conference!
Canvas Updates
Jerry's Tech Tips: Sharing Video Folders in Panopto
Updated Student Canvas Training course now available
eLearning's Nick Taylor has recently finished renovating the Canvas Training for CCS Students course! It looks great, includes up-to-date information and screenshots, and is fully accessible and mobile-friendly. Students see a global announcement when they first log into Canvas encouraging them to visit the training course. We also recommend either directly linking to the training course in your Start Here module or putting a link in your syllabus. This will be our long-term place for student-facing Canvas materials and guides. A course pack is also available in Canvas Commons if you'd prefer to embed the content directly in your course, just search for "Canvas Training for CCS Students."
