Updated Student Canvas Training course now available

eLearning's Nick Taylor has recently finished renovating the Canvas Training for CCS Students course! It looks great, includes up-to-date information and screenshots, and is fully accessible and mobile-friendly. Students see a global announcement when they first log into Canvas encouraging them to visit the training course. We also recommend either directly linking to the training course in your Start Here module or putting a link in your syllabus. This will be our long-term place for student-facing Canvas materials and guides. A course pack is also available in Canvas Commons, if you'd prefer to embed the content directly in your course.

Minor Tweak to Tech Talks scheduling

Inspired by something that SFCC CETL director Jared Anthony has started doing, we're going to try scheduling Tech Talks for 1:05pm rather than 1pm on the dot. We're all feeling busy, frantically running from one class or meeting to the next, and sometimes those meeting times are self-imposed and arbitrary. Go get yourself a cup of coffee and take a bathroom break, we'll be here waiting for you!

Tuesdays at 1:05pm we host short (20 minutes, give or take) discussions of an eLearning technology or technique. We will be live-streaming on Zoom and YouTube. If you'd like to be part of the recording, join the Zoom session. If you'd like to view the presentation and interact on chat, visit the live YouTube broadcast. You'll also be able to watch the YouTube recordings at any time after the broadcast.

April 12 @ 1:05pm: Early Intervention using Canvas People and Access Report
Connecting with students early and offering support and intervention when needed is a key part of student retention and success. But in online learning disengaged students sometimes fall through the cracks, and problems aren't recognized until it's too late for them to turn things around. In this session we'll look at some of the student analytic tools available in Canvas, and how you can use them to identify problems and intervene early.

April 19 @ 1:05pm: Jeopardy Labs

Jeopardy-style games are an easily accessible, engaging, and fun way to prep for tests, reinforce learning, and give students formative feedback. There are a variety of ways to create Jeopardy boards for in-person, live online, and asynchronous classrooms. In this session we'll look at a free tool called Jeopardy Labs. Join us to learn how to use the tool, as well as how to run a Jeopardy session virtually.

April 26 @ 1:05pm: Canvas Rubrics and Rubric Design
Assessment and grading can be a time consuming task for faculty, and a mystifying process to students. How do you maintain objectivity, clearly articulate grading criteria, and provide feedback in a timely manner? Rubrics can save time, avoid unintentional bias, and give students transparent, actionable criteria for success. In this session we'll look at the Rubric tool in Canvas. We'll talk about designing effective rubrics, along with organizing and re-using rubrics in Canvas.
