eLearning Newsletter for November, 2021

Comic transcript available below

Comic Transcript Panel 1: Nick says, "Since the dawn of time, instructors have struggled to balance the need for in-class interaction and project work with the time constraints of delivering instructional content. They laughed at me when I said there was a solution, but I've done it... Behold! I have created the perfect hybrid of face-to-face and online instruction, in the form of a hybrid instructional designer!"

Panel 2: Caleb stumbles out of a glowing machine, transformed into a horrible crab monster. He groans, "help me!"

Panel 3: Nick says, "Yikes. Umm... Well, I mean, hybrid learning is really a... broad spectrum of techniques and ideas. It doesn't have to include abominations of nature."

Hybrid Learning Module

This month we're excited to debut our new professional development module on Hybrid Teaching! This module is a bit more in-depth than some of our earlier monthly modules, and includes some great interactive page design that we're particularly proud of. Because of the extra content in this module, those that complete it will get a $75 stipend instead of our normal $25! Check the Professional Development tab below for more info.

November Tech Talks

Along with our Hybrid Teaching module, we'll also have four weekly Tech Talks in November! We'll be hosting sessions on Nov. 2, 9, 16, and 30, but we won't have a Tech Talk on Nov. 23. We've got some great topics planned for this month, check the Professional Development tab below for the full schedule.

Canvas Updates

Canvas has had several significant tool and feature updates recently, and more are on the horizon. Be sure to check the Canvas Updates tab below to see what's new!

Tech Talks

Tuesdays at 1:00pm we host short (20 minutes, give or take) discussions of an eLearning technology or technique. We will be live-streaming on Zoom and YouTube. If you'd like to be part of the recording, join the Zoom session. If you'd like to view the presentation and interact on chat, visit the live YouTube broadcast. You'll also be able to watch the YouTube recordings at any time after the broadcast.

Nov. 2 @ 1pm: Your Students are Using Chromebooks, here's what You Should Know!
More and more students are relying on Chromebooks as their primary college device, because they're inexpensive and widely available. But a Chromebook is not like a Windows or Apple computer in some important ways, and can create some limitations in what students can access and do. We'll talk about what Chromebooks can do, what they can't do, and what you should be aware of as an instructor.

Nov. 9 @ 1pm:
New Features in SpeedGrader and Assignments
Canvas has recently made some useful updates to SpeedGrader and Assignments. We’ll show off some new features like Comment Libraries, Reassign, and Student Annotation! This Tech Talk will cover much of the same content featured by eLearning on Campus Development Day, so this is a great chance to see what you missed.

Nov. 16 @ 1pm: Student Recordings as Authentic Assessment
One powerful form of assessment is to have students demonstrate what they know. Canvas has tools that make it relatively easy to record and upload audio and video as assignment submissions. In this session we'll look at Panopto assignments for students, recording media from computers and phones, and uploading media to Canvas.

Nov. 30 @ 1pm: Rocketbook and Digital Note Taking
Susan Williams (Electronics Engineering instructor at SCC) has been using Rocketbook, a reusable, physical notebook that makes it easy to scan and save notes and drawings as digital files. Susan will share her experiences with Rocketbook and give us a demonstration, and we'll talk about some other digital note taking tools while we're at it. You can join this session virtually, or you can stop by the SCC eLearning/TLC office to get a hands-on experience!

Building a Better NormalFall Focus: Hybrid Teaching

These past few years have shed light on the critical nature of design in the classroom. We have adapted to the changing frontier of education over a period of time that could be politely described as highly accelerated. Techniques just beginning to crest the new wave of education were thrust into the educational marketplace where trial and error helped mold them into commonplace practices that are now a norm among instructors. Our goal with building a better normal is to continue to use those hard fought pandemic skills and maintain the gains we as instructors have made in the arenas of flexibility, inclusivity, and accessibility.

For our Fall Focus 🍂🔍, eLearning has developed a module on Hybrid Course Design, a design model that allows instructors to blend our new online skillset with the things we love about on-ground and face-to-face interaction. Hybrid Learning can be used by instructors looking to improve the flexibility of their on-ground courses through integrating online tools to solve complex problems dealing with everything from classroom management to scheduling. This training module is more comprehensive than many of our previous offerings, so faculty that complete this module will be eligible for a larger, $75 stipend! We expect the module will take between 2 and 3 hours to complete, and can be done entirely at your own pace.
