Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to align with our module objective of "identify how principles of UDL can be used to improve student access and equity, and implement UDL principles in one aspect of our course" Utilizing the strategies and tools we've discovered through this module, let's put into practice a proven technique to assist our learners.
Task:
- Identify an activity, policy, procedure, or curriculum item in your course that you want to modify to incorporate concepts of Universal Design for Learning.
- Describe how the item is currently designed, delivered, and assessed.
- Reflect on how the item could be improved or supplemented using UDL concepts to increase student choice or means of access.
- Describe your plan and expected timeline for implementing this new UDL-informed item.
- Reflect on any concerns or uncertainty you might have about your plan, and any technical or instructional assistance that eLearning might be able to provide.
Criteria:
Here's an example.
-
- I assign a 5-page paper around mid-term in my class, worth a significant part of the total course grade.
- The assignment is to write a 5-page research paper on a specific learning technology that the student wants to learn how to use. Students must follow APA formatting and styles, and include a reference page. 70% of the paper's grade is based on the student's knowledge of learning technology concepts and the rigor of their research, 30% of the grade is based on writing mechanics.
- On reflection, there's no reason that this assignment must always be in the form of a research paper. None of my course learning objectives involve writing papers, that's just the format I've always used to assess student understanding of the course concepts. I could imagine that a student could just as effectively talk about their technology research and demonstrate their understanding of the core concepts with a video presentation or with a substantial slide deck.
- I want to re-write the mid-term assignment to allow students to choose from several different formats that they can submit. I'll keep the option of a 5-page paper, but I'm going to add the option of a 10-15 minute video, a 10-15-minute podcast-style audio file, or a 15-20-slide PowerPoint presentation. I'd like to have this ready to implement before the start of Winter quarter, and roll it out then.
- I'm going to need to re-write my grading rubric so that it can be used to accurately grade student work in a variety of formats. I think that will mean creating grading criteria that focusses less on the mechanics of the submission, and more on how well they demonstrate their understanding of the core concepts. I may need help designing some more appropriate grading criteria.
