Quality Matters - Module Overview
Online learning has grown significantly at our colleges. In 2017, IPEDS data shows that 44% of students took at least one online class at SFCC and 24% of students at SCC. This data is also showing the steadily increasing number of students who exclusively take online classes. With our growing community of online learners, having resources available to help us with our online course design is important. Among those resources, having access to peer reviewed course design rubrics and professional development can provide a huge asset to those teaching online or hybrid courses.
There are different methods that are recognized on a national level for their excellence of quality assurance and course design. Some of these include:
- Suny (Links to an external site.)OSCQR (Open Suny Cote Quality Review) process and rubric is an online course design rubric and process that addresses both the instructional design and accessibility of an online course that is openly licensed for anyone to use and adapt. The aim of OSCQR is to support continuous improvements to the quality and accessibility of online courses.1
- CSU QLT (Links to an external site.) (Quality Learning and Teaching) The Quality Learning and Teaching (QLT; formerly QOLT) program was developed to assist faculty, faculty developers, and instructional designers to more effectively design and deliver online, blended, and flipped courses. The QLT evaluation instrument, contains 9 sections with 53 objectives, providing guidance and feedback to instructors.2
- Quality Matters (Links to an external site.) (QM) is a faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online courses and online components receiving national recognition for its peer-based approach to quality assurance and continuous improvement in online education. QM consists of three primary components: The QM Rubric, The Course Review Process and QM Professional Development Opportunities for faculty.3
Although the three processes are designed and applied differently, they remain consistent in the commonly identified need to have quality at the forefront of course design. The SBCTC has paid for a statewide subscription the Quality Matters. This module will guide you through some introductory information about what the statewide subscription entails, give you an opportunity to explore QM, and see if further training and development opportunities may be a good fit for you.
