Video Spectrum

What kind of video do you need?

In our conversation with Ira and David we referred to the idea that there are several different kinds of instructional video that can be used for different purposes. Depending on the type you create, they will require different amounts of time needed to produce and have different software and hardware requirements. A key thing to remember is that there are a lot of situations in which you can get value from some very small levels of video production using equipment that you probably already have access to, such as a smartphone. Here we refer to this kind of video as Instant Video. In the interactive graphic below we have laid out the types of video on a continuum based on the complexity of video production value, as well as some potential use cases, and video samples of each.

We see this range including:

SFCC Studio Day.jpgInstant Video - This is video that needs no to little production to have instructional value. Just shoot on a smartphone or action-cam and post.

Office Recordings - Here you might be adding a little more production work setting up a webcam, some lights, or an external microphone to record directly into Canvas, Panopto, or other editing software like Camtasia. Use of this software also allows you to share your screen or a powerpoint while you narrate.

Faculty Studio - The faculty studio increases production value while reducing the amount of work needed because we've already set up the lights, camera, and studio quality microphone and studio environment. Record to Panopto or Camtasia and we can help you edit and post videos to your course. Here's a 360° tour of the SFCC Faculty Studio and Production Studio Links to an external site.. (Drag around in the video to see what's behind the camera.)

Production Studio - This is the highest level of production offered. Schedule with our media production specialist, Rick Suhr to record in his studio, your classroom, or other another location. Rick brings the professional level equipment needed and provides all editing and post-production services.
