Using Template Pages (Read Me First)

Thanks for checking out the template pages. These template pages are meant simply to be a starting point. Feel free to modify them to fit your course and its needs.

Here are a couple tips that will give you a better experience building courses with templates:

1. Import the entire toolkit into the course you're building.

If you're viewing this page in the Faculty Development course, or in a colleague's course and want to use one of the templates it might be tempting to simply copy/paste the content from one course to another. While this may work for most of the text, some formatting, graphics, and linked content may not translate correctly to your new course. Instead, the most reliable option is to import the content from Canvas Commons into the course you're working in. Click the link below to access the most up-to-date version of the eLearning Faculty Toolkit and import it into your course.

In Canvas Commons, select the course or courses in the upper-right corner that you want to copy it into and click the "Import Into Course" button. If you already have the templates in a course and want to use them in another course, simply import them from Commons again. This is the most reliable way to be sure that you get the complete collection of resources.

2. Duplicate Template Pages for Use

Once you've imported the resources into your course, you'll want to get started building your pages. Be careful not to start editing right in the template page. Use the new Duplicate Page feature to make a complete copy of the template to work in. You can do this as many times as needed for the number of pages you will be creating. For example, if you use weekly modules you may want 12 copies of the Module Overview page.

If you haven't done this before, here's a quick tutorial on duplicating pages.

Note: You won't need to duplicate the icons page.  Once you import the toolkit into your course those icon images are added to your course images folder and you can access them in the content selector tool on the right just like any other image in your course.
